Third topic. Primary Perception

Well, it seems that most of you loved the previous post about Cellular Memory. Hope you ‎will like this one too. Let’s continue talking about cells but in different aspect.‎

If cells do have a Memory, then I think it will be very convenient if they can feel too! 🙂 ‎don’t you agree?

While talking about Cellular Memory scientist have used heart-transplantation as proof. In ‎this time we will use plants!‎
In other word, the question is does plants feel?? Do they or don’t? To answer this ‎question we have to go through a long journey between yes and no!

Let’s begin with Cleve Backster, known as polygraph expert (lie detector).He have shown ‎an interest in plants when he discover that plant react to thoughts and threats. He also ‎claimed that plants even can read human minds. However his initial aim was to know how ‎long does the water take from the root area all the way up to the leaf for a dracaena plant. ‎So he put a (GSR) Galvanic Skin Response, which is section of the polygraph measure the ‎resistance of the skin to a small electrical current at the end of leaf. And the theory is when ‎a person lies, they are anxious and the amount of sweat increases slightly but measurably. ‎As sweat increases, the resistance to electrical current decreases.‎

‎ “Next, I noticed something on the chart that resembled a human response on a ‎polygraph. In other words, the contour of the pen tracing was not what I would expect ‎from water entering a leaf, but instead what I would expect from a person taking a lie-‎detector test” he said.‎

He begins trying to get emotions out from that plant. So he had taken the leaf and dips it in ‎a warm coffee cup, but he didn’t get any response from the plant just like it was bored! At ‎that point, an idea crossed his mind (a thought) “I know what I am going to do: I am going ‎to burn that plant leaf, that very leaf that’s attached to the polygraph”. But he didn’t have ‎the matches in the room. During that time, Cleve have witnessed a wild agitation. After ‎that when his partner try out to do the same experiment this what happens >>>‎

‎ He said “Now when my partner in the polygraph school we were running at the ‎time came in, he was able to do the same thing also, as long as he intended to burn the ‎plant leaf. If he pretended to burn the plant leaf, it wouldn’t react.”


And since that day, many supporters have come along to support what Mr. Backster called ‎a (primary perception). In fact, the ability of plants reading our bioenergetic fields known ‎as (Backster effect). Nevertheless, still there are people refuted Mr. Backster claims. Their ‎main argue is about the way Mr. Backster did the experiment. They say that he didn’t pay ‎attention to the controls of experiment. Perhaps the moisture or humidity causes effect in ‎the GSR reading not by his thought.


This issue has become quite controversial. Definitely, it will be interesting to have an ‎answer which is overwhelmed with evidence for [(Does plants feel?) or in other word ‎‎(Does our cells feel?)]. In my perspective, if cells do have the ability to memorize or feel, it ‎will be considered just like any other mechanisms which help the cell to stay a live! Isn’t it ‎the one of the main purpose of a cell? (I mean staying a live!)‎

Bottom line is we have to develop our ability to think critically otherwise, we won’t be ‎future scientist! ‎

Second topic.Cellular memory

Hi Everybody… It’s The Time to Get Fascinated 😉 ‎

Today, I’d like to write an interesting story I heard from my older sister who have attended ‎a seminar called “The DNA role on effecting plants and water” by lecturer Youssef Shukran.


‎ He has mentioned a story of a young girl who was suffering from heart issues and she got ‎heart transplantation. In fact, the heart which was transplanted belongs to a young boy ‎died in a car crash. After the procedure of heart transplantation she became healthy.    The ‎strange thing is that when she was discharged from the hospital and walking in the hospital ‎green lawn, the father of the dead boy was a few steps away trying to hide himself ‎observing her as she walked.       Suddenly, she leaves her own father’s hand and hurries ‎toward the boy’s father like there was a strange attraction between them, as if she has ‎seen an old acquaintance, she hugs him tightly. For some moments, then, she goes back ‎and holds the hand of her father again leaving the path like nothing strange had taken ‎place! ‎

Well, this story kept me wondering how could be that possible. As we all know that a heart ‎is an organ which pumps blood throughout blood vessels by repeated rhythmic ‎contractions. So how dose that effect the girl’s behavior?

As always, if you have a question, you have to seek for an answer. So that’s why I have ‎begun my search on this issue. Luckily, I have found an explanation for this strange ‎PHENOMENON.


‎ And the explanation is “Cellular Memory” which is a theory state that our brain is not the ‎only organ which stores our memories, personalities, habits and taste it can store in our ‎other cells too. Mostly, heart transplantation surgeries support this theory. In order to ‎study this concept doctors with help of the hospitals system forbids transplantee to know ‎or speak to the donor’s family. ‎

One of the known stories on this topic will be the story of an American woman called Sylvia ‎Claire ‎‏47‏‎ years old received a heart from 18 years old Mexican boy who was killed in a ‎motorcycle accident, and after the heart transplantation she begins to feel changes in here ‎attitudes which basically was an acquiring the characteristics of the donor’s. She even ‎wrote a book about her experiences towards this heart transplantation called “A Change of ‎A Heart” ‎

Another astonishing story is an 8 year old girl who received the heart of a 10 year old girl ‎who was killed. After few days the recipient was overwhelmed with dramatic nightmares ‎about an attacker and a girl being murdered. And after few sessions with a psychiatrist who ‎become convinced by what the girl’s says. Then, they decide to corporate with police by ‎the descriptions from the little girl, they found the murderer who turns out to be the killer ‎of her donor’s. ‎

However, there are millions of people questioning the validity of the concept of Cellular ‎Memory. Their biggest question is why doesn’t it occur more often?        One answer would be ‎because of the neuropeptides(which function as keys that fit into specific types of ‎receptors located on the surface of heart cells) when we get a transplanted heart which ‎already have it unique set of self receptor that are different from the recipient. As a result, ‎the recipient possesses cells will respond to two different identities. And basically, not ‎every recipient will sense that a set of cells within their body is now responding to a second ‎signal. ‎

After all it seems there’s a huge luck of information related to Cellular Memory. I felt ‎surprised when I figure out that this phenomenon is not new actually its known even ‎before 1988! Hope that the science society will give this topic a littlie more attention. ‎

As far as for my understanding, it is kind of easy to believe in. I remember my previous ‎professor says “whenever you think about a cell, think about yourself”. Also there is a ‎growing number of scientists who have adopted that “every cell in our body has its own ‎‎‘mind’…and if you transfer tissues from one body to another, the cells from the first body ‎will carry memories into the second body”. ‎

First topic. Stem cells

Hi Everyone …

So my first topic will be on the stem cells …!

To be honest, I have got inspirit on this topic from the last seminar I have attended. It was about “Induction of Pluripotent Stem Cells”. And unfortunately I didn’t understand a thing. >.<”
But now things are gone change.

First, let’s begin with the definition of stem cell and with an introduction of its types. Basically stem cell means type of a cell found in all multi-organisms which can divide and develop into cells with particular functions.
Which means that stem cells have unique properties such as self-renewal (The ability to go through numerous cycles of cell division while maintaining the undifferentiated state) and potency (the capacity to differentiate into specialized cell types).
The main two types of stem cell are embryonic stem cells which are isolated from the inner cell mass within a blastocysts and adult stem cells that are found in adult tissues.
To get in more details with Embryonic stem cell, beginning with a fertilized egg as totipoten,(Totipten has the potential to become all other types of cells in the body). While the Pluripotent stem cells are the descendants of totipotent cells and can differentiate into nearly all cells except those are needed to develop a fetus.

Whereas in adult stem cells we can found progenitor cells that acts just like a repairing system for the body. Also it has importance in mentioning the tissues such as blood, skin, or intestinal tissues.

In addition, the great difference between the both types of stem cells is in the telomerase enzyme which is produced in the embryonic stem cell but not in the Adult stem cells. Which really explain for us why dose the embryonic stem cell have the capacity to divide more thus we are talking about fetus! So bottom line we know that the embryonic stem cells are more useful than the adult stem cells. Obviously we are gone to use embryonic stem cell in the medical field. Like being used be to understand disease mechanisms, to screen effective and safe drugs, and to treat patients of various diseases and injuries, such as juvenile diabetes and spinal cord injury.

So in order to get the embryonic stem cells which are found in the inner cell mass in blastocysts as mentioned earlier when we try to isolate it we are actually killing the fetus!!! Ok seriously it’s a big problem.

To overcome this obstacle the professor Shinya Yamanaka and Kazutoshi Takahashi from Kyoto University got an idea to get the Pluripotent without using the inner cell mass of the blastocyst. In 2006, they have succeeded to do that by using a virus to enter 4 genes into a mouse skin cell. As soon as they inter, the cell begin to face changes which is basically working on reprogramming the cell into Pluripotent state. As called “Induction of Pluripotent Stem Cells” for short (iPS cells). After one year later, they take the same concept and use it in human instead of the mouse.

Well, luckily I was able to put my hand on those two studies (of course by help from my friend). However, it seems like I have to cut long distance before I can fully understand them. Not a big problem for a bio student 😉
